At the Advocacy Centre and YEAC Community Energy and Development Ltd/Gte, our mission has always been clear: to bridge the energy gap in our communities through sustainable, clean, and empowering solutions. It was in pursuit of this mission that I was honored to accept an invitation to serve as a facilitator at a pivotal community empowerment event in Esit Eket, Akwa Ibom State, on October 21.
The event, masterfully organized by the Network Advancement Program for Poverty and Disaster Risk Reduction (NAPPDRR) under the visionary leadership of its Director, Hon. Emem Edoho, was a powerful demonstration of grassroots action. With crucial support from the Global Greengrants Fund and Oilwatch Africa, the initiative was designed not just to talk about solar energy, but to equip the people of Esit Eket with the practical knowledge to harness it.

My Session: Demystifying Solar Installation and Maintenance My role was to deliver a comprehensive and accessible lecture on "Solar Panel Installation and Maintenance Best Practices." My goal was to move beyond theory and provide a hands-on guide that community members could immediately apply. Seeing the keen interest and intelligent questions from the participants was truly inspiring.
Here’s a summary of the key principles I shared, which form the bedrock of safe and effective solar energy systems:
- The Non-Negotiable: Safety First Before a single panel is lifted, safety must be the priority. I stressed the critical importance of:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always using gloves, safety glasses, and insulated footwear.
Secure Workspace: Ensuring all scaffolding and ladders are stable before beginning installation.
Electrical Safety: Adhering strictly to electrical safety guidelines and local codes to prevent shocks and fire hazards.
- The Art and Science of Proper Installation A correctly installed system is a long-lasting and efficient one. We delved into the core techniques:
Optimal Orientation and Tilt: Positioning panels to capture the maximum possible sunlight throughout the day.
Secure Mounting: Using robust, weather-resistant racking systems to ensure panels remain firmly in place, even in harsh weather.
Correct Wiring and Connections: Implementing proper wiring techniques to minimize power loss and ensure system reliability.
- Ensuring Longevity Through Proactive Maintenance A solar system is an investment, and protecting it requires consistent care. I highlighted crucial maintenance routines:
Regular Cleaning: Keeping panels free from dust, bird droppings, and debris to maintain peak efficiency.
Routine Physical Inspections: Checking for micro-cracks, corrosion, or other physical damage.
Performance Monitoring: Keeping an eye on system output to quickly identify any significant drops in performance.
Basic Troubleshooting: Empowering owners to identify common issues like inverter fault codes or loose connections before they become major problems.
I also discussed the strategic advantage of integrating battery storage for effective energy management, ensuring power availability even when the sun isn't shining.
A Collective Step Towards Energy Independence The success of this event underscores a powerful truth: the transition to clean energy in the Niger Delta will be driven by knowledgeable and empowered local communities.
