Press Statement IV August 12, 2025: Empowering Nigerian Youths for a Sustainable Future

August 12, 2025

Today, we join the global community to commemorate International Youth Day, a day set aside to recognize the contributions and potential of young people in shaping the future of our world. The theme for this year's celebration is a call to action that resonates deeply with the mission of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria).

As we reflect on the challenges facing Nigerian youths, particularly in the Niger Delta region, we are reminded of the critical role young people play in promoting environmental sustainability and advocating for human rights. YEAC-Nigeria has been at the forefront of empowering youths to become agents of change in their communities, providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to address environmental issues and promote sustainable development.

Key Issues Facing Nigerian Youths:

Environmental Degradation: The Niger Delta region has been plagued by environmental degradation, including oil spills and pollution, which have devastating impacts on the livelihoods of local communities.

Climate Change: Climate change poses a significant threat to Nigeria's economy, environment, and human health, and young people must be equipped to mitigate its effects.

Unemployment and Lack of Opportunities: Many Nigerian youths face significant challenges in accessing employment opportunities, leading to frustration and disillusionment.

Call to Action:

On this International Youth Day, YEAC-Nigeria calls on:

Government Agencies: to prioritize youth empowerment and environmental sustainability in their policies and programs.

Private Sector: to invest in youth-led initiatives and provide support for environmental projects.

Civil Society Organizations: to collaborate with YEAC-Nigeria in promoting youth advocacy and environmental awareness.

Conclusion:

As we celebrate International Youth Day, we recognize the potential of Nigerian youths to drive positive change in their communities. YEAC-Nigeria remains committed to empowering young people to become leaders in environmental advocacy and sustainability.

Signed:

Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface

Executive Director, YEAC-Nigeria
